Plowing in Fertile Soil

It's like plowing in fertile soil to peruse the volumes of Keil & Delitzsch. The authors examine the cultural aspects that background each Old Testament book, and squeeze the Hebrew and cognate languages to provide the best possible interpretation. Nor are the authors myopic; for they note within the text and within rich footnotes the conclusions of others --even those with whom they disagree. One does not always have to agree with an author's harvested conclusion in order to find benefit in study. Sometimes just being in the sun and walking behind the plow is a "harvest" in itself.

My Daddy swears by this one [this is the one other commentators quote] - and I like it...but I really wish they would not have Hebrew/Greek mid-sentence...some people may love that - but it makes it more difficult for me to read.

The gold standard

Although originally published more than one hundred years ago, the Keil and Delitzsch "Commentary on the OT" remains the gold standard for all complete OT commentaries. Although a knowledge of Hebrew is helpful (Hebrew words in the Hebrew script are found throughout) it is not necessary to know Hebrew in order to understand the verse by verse commentary provided by the authors. Each verse of the OT is thoroughly examined, and where there are differing interpretations of verses, these are noted and explanations given for why one rather than another is to be preferred. I use Keil and Delitzsch frequently in my studies of the OT and go to it first before consulting other commentaries. In fact, in many instances, once I have read the relevant material in Keil and Delitzsch there really is no compelling reason to consult another commentary. If you can afford to buy just one commentary set on the OT, this is the one to purchase.
