Refreshing take on magical creatures

I bought this book after reading a couple of other ones that focused on the fae with strong elements of romance, expecting this one to be similar but I was impressed by the unique elements Washington has added. One thing though that I have to stress on is that there were more than a few grammatical errors and mixing up of if/of, your/you're, humans instead of human's and switching or omission of words in a sentence. It wasn't a deal breaker because the storyline and characters made up for the mistakes but I wish it had gone through at least two more rounds of editing for spelling and grammar. That being said, Washington's writing itself is decent. It's not clipped to action nor overly wrought of descriptions. There's a very good balance. However, I feel it's the author's responsibility to proof the work so I'm dinging 1 star for too many errors.
The story centers on a girl who's a synfee, a magical species that is feared to be "cannibalistic" and her beginning to study at an academy in the kingdom she lives in. She befriends a boy named Cale, who's friends with the Prince (Hazen) and they become friends, dealing with her volatile powers. In addition, she meets a mysterious man named Nareon of her own kind and you can pretty much ensue the "should I or shouldn't I?" trope. That's basically the gist of the plot without spoiling anything terribly.
Right from the beginning, the story introduces all the elements and gives a rather in depth background of the world and its rules more or less. I tend not to like that type of setup as I prefer things to be shown, rather than told simply but fortunately the story after that is much more engrossing and still has plenty of mystery and suspense.

While I liked the main character Beatrice well enough, I found her kind of bland. She's too dependent on her friends, lacking the will to resist temptations or to control herself. But because of what she is, the story followed that aspect in how the males of the book could not help but to coddle and dote on her. Cale, the first friend she meets kind of disappears in importance after a few chapters and an awkward encounter is never addressed later on making their friendship rather shallow. Despite his initial importance, nothing about his story is referred to ever again. Hazen, who has the sketching of a good character lacks a defining presence but is interesting because of his mind reading and mind sharing abilities. Nareon falls into the trope of "typical bad boy who's not that bad but still dangerous" and who he really is and his connection to Beatrice became one of my WTFLOL moments. I feel like near the end, the conveniences of "WELL this just happens to be what happens when x does y so therefore"...and in many instances, automatic magical abilities are the solution rather than the characters learning, developing or earning them (The Girl of Fire and Thorns is a great example of ordinary humans overcoming extraordinary events though hard work, luck and intelligence) which makes the story to me about an easily manipulated girl with no self control being influenced by and needing everyone around her. It doesn't quite set her up to be a strong heroine nor a very likeable character. I can see her whining and deferring to everyone around her for the sequel so I hope that she grows into her own.
Lastly, Joseph the mad but hot professor is also a distinct personality but isn't given as much depth as he should. Add in his role as being the deus ex machina in sticky situations (not to mention Nareon) and I can safely say that the main character had no development whatsoever except for other male characters' influence on her. The King too wasn't really addressed much and aside from the potential of attacks from the synfee species - the story was more about Beatrice dealing with her powers and being manipulated by everyone, without trying to help herself. By another author, that would have been beyond irritating but I liked that there were many unique elements because despite my criticism, Beatrice not being a ninja fire wielding super mage was refreshing. Too many female main characters in this genre have or suddenly gain super skills and while I personally dislike a weak will, sometimes a story needs it.
All in all, I found the world building somewhat lacking as one character utters "Jesus' and it confused me because if it were a middle ages type of timeline parallel to Earth, I doubt people blurted that out and unless this story took place in the future-regressed-middle ages, it felt like it was left there accidentally. There was also no background or reasoning for why the synfee would attack Hazen's kingdom. The quest for Beatrice to find out who was responsible for destroying Nareon's kingdom didn't actually occur and the justification was poor because despite visiting Nareon to feed, they didn't actually do anything! If it were so pressing, one would think they'd start out right away. So in many ways, there was some imbalance on what the focus of the story was. Despite the lack of character development and background (I especially disliked the father who was just there and it was strange how Beatrice didn't really mention her mother much) I found many components of the book very good, some lacking...but the author definitely has a unique mind for things not cliched and with better editing and pacing, as well as depth I look forward to further books!

Bad transitions, but EXCELLENT story.

I want to start off by saying that the premise of this book was fantastic. The ideas —outstanding. The writing— intriguing. The plot— all the main ingredients for perfection... the execution—ehh, a little lacking.
Lets start from the beginning. Everything was extremely rushed. Bea going to school, learning about Force and about her impending birthday, making friends, trusting said friends... it all seemed to just happen without much of a transition. This was a common theme throughout the novel that lead to a bit of whip lash. It seemed new information, or events, or battles, or people would just pop up out of no where without any signal or foretelling. In fact, this story lacked in foretelling plot wise that ultimately hindered the story over all. I would normally only give a 3 star rating to a book like this... however, the actual story more than made up for transition issues.
Where the story lacking in transition, it made up for in mystery and intrigue. I was constantly at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. The descriptions were so enthralling and detailed that I found myself laughing, raging, crying, and being confused and lost (as a character) right along with Bea. The story was actually well written in terms of word use, cliff hangers, and the MOST important, character development. And after giving all of this praise, you know why I couldn't give this book a 3 star rating, but I couldn't give it a perfect 5 out of 5 either.
I wonder if the idea of this story was inspired by Kristin Cashore's Fire. The description of Bea reminded me so much of her. The enthralling beauty, the fact that people start by hating her and fearing her, but she is such a lost and scared person that she can't help but draw people in... I loved it. I loved it in Fire and I loved it here.
As for the romantic aspect, I am so torn between Joseph (aka Harbringer as he is more commonly referred to) and Hazen. I feel that on a practical level, things with Hazen could never work out. He is a little judgy, he is moral, and he pries into Bea's mind constantly and doesn't always like what he sees...then goes all scowly. But, he is always there for her, and obviously loves her. But I am definitely leaning toward team Joseph. He is bad ass, able to handle her powers (aka compulsion so he isn't madly gah gah over her) and no so judgy. But he an older man.... who am I kidding, I think thats hot! I hope I get to see more interaction between the two in the next book!

Take a bite out of this wonderful fantasy novel and you wont be disappointed

When we received the request from Jane to review her debut novel, I gotta admit, I was a little scared of the fantasy angle. I've read vampire/werewolf books and fairy books but this one was definitely something different.
Including all our super natural favorites, "Hereditary" introduces us to a completely different world full of all types of creatures and powerful beings. In particular, our lead, Beatrice Harrow is a synfree. Synfrees are known for their incredible beauty but this beauty allows them to feed off the desire and life force of those less powerful. Beatrice is 1/2 synfree from her mother and has been fairly sheltered most of her life due to the hatred that most races have against the synfrees.
In "Hereditary," Beatrice is starting the Academy. A school for the gifted creatures. She is immediately a target for stares, comments, hatred and questioning looks. One student in particular, Cale, is the only student to make a point of coming up to Beatrice and attempting to be her friend.
"You're infamous. Apparently you have hair the colour of a desert sunset, and eyes that flash like a desert storm, nobody told me that your personality was like a desert cactus as well."
When Cale befriends Beatrice, he comes with a number of his own friends including the Prince and Princess of the human world, Hazen and Rose.
With just days until Beatrice turns 18, she is approached by another synfree who says he is there to help her deal with the power she will inherit on her birthday. Already she is feeling the need to "feed" and is forced to do so with the powerful synfree who turns out to be the King of synfrees. But this feeding creates some significant issues that no one appears to see coming. These issues combined with the incredible and unusual amount of power that Beatrice herself possesses, can only lead to one thing.
"Hereditary" truly was a great read if you are looking to break out of the normal romance. There is definitely some steamy moments, since our young Beatrice must "feed" off of desire in order to sustain herself. Mix that with a sexy prince, powerful King and some amazing side characters. Take a bite out of this wonderful fantasy novel and you wont be disappointed, well except that Book 2 isn't out yet!
