First in a NEW series!

Still grieving over the sudden death of his lover, antiques dealer Flynn Ambrose moves to the ramshackle old house on Pitch Pine Lane to catalog and sell the large inventory of arcane and oddball items that once filled his late uncle's mysterious museum.

But not all the items are that easy to catalog. Or get rid of...

˃˃˃ The Haunted Heart series. Four seasons. Four ghosts. Two hearts.

Winter.

Since Alan died, Flynn isn't eating, isn't sleeping, and isn't spending a lot of time looking in mirrors. But maybe he should pay a little more attention. Because something in that 18th Century mirror is looking at him.

Another Wonderful Book By My Favorite Author
By ChinaBlue
What a wonderful start to this new series. I loved the subtle allusion to Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in the title/theme of this book/series - but then Josh has shown us, in various books, that he has an extensive handle on classical music. I chuckled at the humor interspersed throughout the book - sometimes snarky, sometimes gentle - but always most apropos to a particular situation between the main characters - a hallmark of his writing. And while I do not normally seek out paranormal stories, this little gem (and presumably those to follow) gave me much reading pleasure and made me really and truly want to believe in ghosts and troubled spirits and things that go bump in the night. And finally, I would be completely remiss if I didn't mention what a kick I got out of seeing the appearance of Stephen and Mark from his "I Spy" series, a special favorite of mine. Hopefully we will see more of them in future books - I have a strong suspicion that Mark, in particular, could help Kirk with some of the demons that seem to haunt him.

There is one very bleak pronouncement by Flynn that wrenched my heart and by the end of the book I was not certain that this issue had been resolved. Most likely it has not and I look forward to how Josh, and his two MCs, deal with this in future books.

All in all - another outstanding piece of writing by my favorite author!

I Loved Flynn and Kirk
By Thomas R Patchen
Josh Lanyon's books are a pleasure to read... the dialogue flows so naturally and the storyline is always compelling. While I normally do not care for paranormal/fantasy books, I'm always happy to suspend belief for Josh Lanyon because he does not take it over the top. Once again he is giving us two interesting, quirky, likeable main characters who have real problems and flaws: Flynn and Kirk. They are very different physically but have a strong emotional connection. Josh Lanyon does a great job with slowly building their friendship and attraction to one another in a realistic way... also showing us their vulnerabilities. I especially love the way he describes facial expressions or posture to let us know how the character really feels in a situation.... and Josh knows just the right words to use to pull my heartstrings at the right moment. And as always, I love the humor that is off beat and interjected at the most inappropriate time... Ha! Rarely do I go back and reread passages in a book.. but I did with this one... much like I did with "Come Unto These Yellow Sands" (which I've read three times... a first for me!). My only complaint... I want more and longer!!! (sounds dirty... but you know what I mean!) ... however, I see he has three more books planned in this series, so all I have to say is: "Hurry, Josh!!"

All hail the return of Josh Lanyon.
By Ulysses Dietz
Ah, how nice to spend time in Josh Lanyon's mind again.

A romance in the old sense of the word - a story about the human heart, not about hookups turning into love along the way.

The first of a series (I'm guessing a four part series, given the title and the setting), "The Haunted Heart: Winter" is both a satisfying work of romantic literature AND a great set-up for what (I certainly hope) will come next.

Flynn could be the protagonist in a sequel to a YA novel where the Happy Ever After goes bad. A year earlier, at twenty-five, Flynn's lifelong friend, lover and soulmate died suddenly. All we really know at first is that Flynn has been scarred so deeply by that loss that his family fears for him.

Kirk, on the other hand, is and remains more of a mystery. Now thirty-nine, a loner and a writer, Kirk holed up two years ago in Flynn's great-uncle Winston's decaying Victorian mansion to hide from whatever horrors his military past left him with. Flynn joins him amidst the clutter of the late Winston's obsessive collecting, hoping to find solace in cataloging the treasures that have become his legacy.

The most important thing we learn about Kirk is that he cannot turn his back when he sees another human being in danger or distress. And Flynn, so far as Kirk can tell, is both. The apparent appearance of a ghost in a huge gilt mirror brings these two self-isolated men together; at first against their wills, but gradually more and more willingly.

Lanyon is spare and witty in his writing. His imagery is beautiful, but not lavish. He gives you what you need to know where you are, and nothing more. His people, however, are more richly drawn - although he begins with the most delicate of sketches and gradually reveals more and more detail, until you have a fully realized picture, flaws and all.

Haunted Heart: Winter is a journey, sometimes literally, but mostly figuratively, as these two men take the first tentative steps out of their individual darkness and into each other's light. It is a ghost story in which the ghost is hardly more tortured than the two men she needs to set her free.

I hope Josh is almost done with part two. His fans are legion, and they're waiting.
