King At His Best
By Randy Johnson
Stephen King is a master of all lengths of fiction(though he's had a couple of misses in novels). FULL DARK, NO STARS is four long stories with angry people in common.

1922(the year) tells the story of a man confessing to murder and how it had turned his life, and his family's, upside down.

BIG DRIVER has an author of cozy mysteries assaulted by a sranger when she has a flat and using her skills to find him, and all those involved for her rvenge.

FAIR EXTENSION finds the protagonist dying of cancer and accepting an offer he can't refuse from a certain fellow. But someone else has to suffer for his new life.

A GOOD MARRIAGE has the wife learning a horrible secret about her husband's other life and the decision she makes.

Four good pieces.

Four Stories, Five Stars
By J. Hill
I gave this five stars because it gives me what I look for in Stephen King books; compelling reading, rich characters, suspense, and lasting, horrifying images. Each of the four stories kept me turning the pages, I never got bored during any of them, and I enjoyed their thematic elements. Some modern King books, like Duma Key and Just After Sunset, while highly entertaining for the most part, haven't completely gotten it done for me, while others, like Under the Dome, Lisey's Story, and now this book, have. It seems like King has so many fans that none of his books is going to satisfy everyone like It or The Stand do (in hindsight, I might add); on this site, most of his books going back to the mid- and early nineties end up with about 3 and a half stars, but many more of his pre-Amazon or Internet books get higher ratings. Some might argue that it's because the old books are better, but given time, I expect some of his post-"retirement" books to gain more praise. Including Full Dark, No Stars, in my opinion, but only time will tell.

Anyway, I enjoyed the karmic warning of "1922," and some of the scenes at the well provided horrific images that I found chilling and memorable. I know others find the gore gratuitous, but I think having the father and son witness some of it makes their psychological deterioration more believable. In "Big Driver," I found King's voice to be somewhat like Sue Grafton in the only fiction of hers I've read, a short story called "Full Circle,"; but, as usual, with a Stephen King demented twist. Tess has a bit of an adventurous, sometimes ironically humorous attitude, all while coping with intense trauma and planning murder. Disturbing and wonderful. "Fair Extension" is not much more than a short story at thiry-one pages, but the only one that offers undeniable supernatural elements. It's like a Bachman story (Thinner, especially) with the revenge aspect and unhappy ending, but I found the twist in this "what would you do if..." story to be the main character's vicious, enduring jealousy and hatred. In the typical story, he'd have to cope with his guilt over passing off his disease, but Streeter is unrepentant to the end. Finally, "A Good Marriage" offers a true Stephen King freak of a character, Beadie. This story, as well as "1922," share some similarities to Dolores Claiborne, and I think the fact that many people would agree with Darcy's actions is supposed to be part of the horror. Lucky for Darcy, she had a much more forgiving detective than Dolores. If you're looking for top-notch Stephen King, look no further than Full Dark, No Stars.

a book of four novellas
By Beth
Because this book is not just one story but several novellas, I review and rate each novella. In the end, I average the ratings for a single rating of FULL DARK, NO STARS.

This is review of the "Big Driver" portion of the book.

This is Stephen King at his best. By that I mean no horror, no supernatural.

This novella is about a writer of cozy mysteries who becomes a crime victim (an understatement, I know) who becomes a vigilante. In her mind, she discusses every decision she makes with and takes advice from the voice in her GPS, her cat, and recurring characters in her cozy mystery series. King makes clear that this is only in her mind or spoken aloud but in her voice.

So far, FULL DARK, NO STARS rates four stars.

This is review of the "A Good Marriage" portion of the book.

Again, no horror or supernatural. Good.

A wife and mother is happily married 25-plus years to a man who, she learns because she stubs her toe, is not the man she thought he was. I believe, although many people don't, that this is possible. So I could buy what follows the toe stubbing.

This is another very good story, again worth four stars. So FULL DARK, NO STARS still rates four.

This is review of the "1922" portion of the book.

Although this novella is the first presented in the book, I read it out of order, third, and it's a good thing I did. Although this is another good story, its first half is so gross you could call it horror, which makes it sometimes difficult to read. So I wouldn't have been as anxious to read the rest of the book if I had read this first.

It is no spoiler to tell you that this begins in 1930 with a man's confession that he murdered his wife in 1922. He goes on to show how everything that happened thereafter was a result of that murder. He also hallucinated about mice a lot and still believes those hallucinations were real, so you might call the mice supernatural if you forget he was hallucinating.

"1922" is a three-star story. So FULL DARK, NO STARS still rates four.

This is review of the "Fair Extension" portion of the book.

This is the type of Stephen King story I got sick of years ago. A guy makes a deal with the devil. He seems content with the horrible things that result.

I'd give this story only two stars.
