"A Great Children's Story With A Powerful Message"

Girls! Girls! Don't look so closely at your selves in mirrors! All girls are really pretty on the outside, and they are also very special on the inside! But in this very appealing story, Tina thinks her nose is awful! Lisa thinks she's too skinny! Meg is too short and can't reach high places! Lonnie thinks she's too tall for the boys! Jane can't fit into small bathing suits! And ... Molly doesn't like her freckles! Girls just seem to find too many things wrong about themselves. All girls are different and will eventually learn that the real beauty is in their smiles, kind words, and through helping others. These values bring good feelings into their hearts. A smile on a little girl's face will always make her eyes shine like diamonds. These are simple lessons to learn, but there are times that these lessons have to be refreshed. I love the artwork and these wonderful messages from which even adults can benefit. The values taught from this one little book will help girls grow into beautiful young ladies. A very admirable book to be read to young girls.

A nice idea, but where are the little girls of color?

“All girls are pretty. That’s a matter of fact. That is one statement, I will not retract.”
ALL GIRLS ARE PRETTY encourages young girls to find beauty on the inside. Height, weight, hairstyle, the size of one’s nose; all of these wonderful variations are part of what makes you unique – and are just window dressing besides. What really matters is who you are as a person.
A lovely message, but one that’s negated by the total lack of diversity among the girls featured. Nine girls, and not one girl of color! There’s not even any variation in skin tone or complexion; all the girls are the same shade of white. The omission is so glaring (especially in the scenes that show the entire group of girls, side-by-side) that I even switched from my Kindle to an iPad to make sure I wasn’t missing something in the black and white version. But nope. There’s not a single non-white girl to be found. Disappointing, to say the least.
