Monterey Peninsula Airport
Monterey, California

Saturday

The black Lexus JX sedan is double-parked outside Gate B, the vehicle’s driver, Jonas Taylor, eyeballing the airport cop who has sent him circling the airport four times already. The sixty-six-year-old paleobiologist glances at his twenty-four-year-old daughter, Danielle, curled up in the passenger seat next to him. The model-pretty blonde, who works part-time for a local NBC-TV affiliate as a news reporter and weekends emceeing shows at the Tanaka Institute, is staring at the digital clock on the dashboard, growing impatient. “Almost four thirty. If his plane doesn’t get here soon, I’ll miss the evening show.”

“His plane just landed. Relax.” Jonas taps the steering wheel to an old Neil Diamond tune on the radio. “Anyway, Olivia can always emcee the show in a pinch.”

“Olivia?” Dani looks at her father as if she just swallowed turpentine. “Dad, the Saturday night show is my gig. Period. Now would you please turn off that annoying song.”

“I like Neil Diamond.”

“Who?”

“Come on, I’m not that old.”

“Yeah, you are. Seriously, Dad, I will pay you to let me change the station.”

“Fine, only no gangster rap.”

“It’s ‘gangsta,’ and get with the times. Ghetto is in. It’s what we relate to.”

“My mistake. I forgot your mother and I raised you as a poor black child in a gang-infested neighborhood.”

The airport cop approaches the Lexus. Before he can signal Jonas to move the car, twenty-year-old David Taylor steps out of the baggage claim exit, an orange and blue University of Florida duffle bag slung over one broad shoulder. Jonas’s son is wearing a gray Gator’s Football tee-shirt, faded jeans, and sneakers. He is fit and tan, his brown hair long, speckled with golden highlights from being in the sun, his almond-brown eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses.

David tosses his duffle in the back seat of the Lexus and climbs in. “Sorry. Plane was an hour late.”

“No worries. We just got here. Right, Dani?”

“Wrong. You know dad, he had to leave an hour early.” She allows David to kiss her cheek. “You look good . . . Jesus, Dad, drive!”

Jonas pulls into traffic, following the signs leading to Highway 68 West.

“You look like you gained a few pounds. Lifting weights again?”

“Yes . . . and no, for the last time, I am not trying out for football.”

“Sure, I know. I just saw the shirt and thought—”

“It’s just a shirt.”

“—because the coach called our house twice last week. He lost two wide-outs to injuries in spring training. With your speed—”

“Dad, enough! My playing days ended in high school.”

“Okay, okay. I just remember my playing days at Penn State . . . those were the best of times.”

“Please, that was half a century ago.” Dani ruffles her father’s thick mane of snowy-white hair. “David, what do you think of Dad’s new look?”

David smiles. “It’s as white as Angel’s ass. It was still gray last time I saw you.”

“Comes from working too closely with monsters.”

“I thought you enjoyed working with Angel’s pups?”

Jonas smiles at his daughter. “I was talking about you.”

Dani smacks him playfully across his head. “I told him he should use that hair stuff that gets rid of the gray.”

“Don’t listen to her, Dad. It makes you look more intelligent. Sort of like Anderson Cooper, only a lot older.”

“Good. I can use all the help I can get. David . . . about this internship—”

“Dad, we talked about this.”

“There are other specialties in marine biology. We just completed the Manta Ray sale with the Naval Warfare Center, thanks, in part, to your piloting demo. The Navy knows you’re the best pilot we have, and the Vice Admiral mentioned they could use a good trainer.”

“You know I love piloting the subs. I just like working with the Megs more. There’s something about big predators—”

“You want big predators? San Diego needs a new trainer for their female orca. I could make a call—”

“Pass.”

“What’s wrong with orcas?”

“Nothing, if you enjoy teaching dog tricks to a whale. Angel’s pups have special needs.”

“Pups? Christ, you make them sound like a litter of cocker spaniels. The three runts are already larger than an adult great white, and the two sisters . . . you tell him, Dani.”

Dani nods, text messaging on her cell phone. “The sisters are evil. They’ll be as big and nasty as their mother.”

“Why do you call them ‘the sisters?’ Technically, all five are sisters.”

“When you see them every day like Dani and I do, you’ll understand. They may have shared the same womb, but the three runts look and act nothing like Bela and Lizzy.” Jonas exits Highway 68, heading south on Highway 1. “How’s Corrine?”

“We broke up.”

Dani looks up. “Seriously? I never liked her.”

“Wait,” Jonas jumps in, “what was wrong with Corrine?”

“She was getting too serious.”

“What’s wrong with serious? Is serious so bad?”

“How’s mom?”

“She’s good. And don’t change the subject.”

“Mom’s stressed out,” Dani says.

“Not PETA again?”

“Worse. A thug off-shoot. They call themselves R.A.W. Stands for Return Animals to the Wild. Dad had to hire a security outfit; they were puncturing the staff’s tires. I’m trying to convince my producer to let me do an exposé. These assholes don’t give a damn about the Megs. They’re just after the free publicity.”

David says nothing, preferring to gaze out his passenger window at the Pacific Ocean peeking through the rolling hillsides.

Jonas weighs the sudden silence. “Go ahead and say it, David. ‘The pen’s too small. The pups are getting too big.’ ”

David looks at his father. “What did the State Assembly say?”

“Same as they’ve always said. No more expansion, at least not along the coast. They offered us six hundred acres in Bakersfield.”

“Bakersfield? Why not Death Valley?”

“There may be another option. Mac and I have a meeting on Monday with Emaar Properties out of the United Arab Emirates. Rumor has it they’re constructing some kind of new state-of-the-art aquarium and hotel in Dubai.”

“I heard about that. The place is supposed to be incredible, ten times the size of the Georgia Aquarium. You think they want one of the pups?”

Jonas nods. “I’d bet the house on it.”

The Lexus heads south on Cabrillo Highway, exiting onto Sand Dunes Drive. David stares at the ocean, mesmerized by its crashing surf, marveling at the differences between Monterey’s rough Pacific and Florida’s calmer Atlantic. He has spent the last three summers interning at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in Fort Pierce, completing field work in order to earn his bachelor’s degree in marine biology. Up ahead he sees the familiar concrete and steel bowl, the arena’s ocean-access canal running out to meet the deeper ocean waters like a submerge...

One "Hell" of a Ride

Steve's research on prehistoric sea monsters is beyond belief. Then being able to wrap an exciting,entertaining,informative and suspense filled fictional story around all this fact made this the best MEG in the series. If you thought MEG's were really bad, just wait till you see what Steve presents in this episodic adventure in "Hell's Aquarium". The first half sets you up, the last half you can't put it down. Be prepared for one Hell of a Ride !!

Hell's Aquarium will unlock a prehistoric hunger within you for the next in the series... NOW!

As an enthusiast of both paleontology and ichthyology the MEG series has been a staple of my literary diet. The first book established a mythos that I adored, the second remains one of my all-time favorite novels, and the third is quite plainly a fun read of non-stop excitement.

For the sake of candor, I should admit that since having read the third book and the preview for Hell's Aquarium online, I have been apprehensive regarding this book and specifically the newest terrifying denizen of the deep in the MEG series - the Liopleurodon. In point of fact, I think the only reason that I didn't enjoy the third book as much was because I couldn't get around the fact that there was supposedly a predator existing in the depths of the Philippine sea in excess of 120 feet! Immediately a nagging voice was unearthed in the back of my mind, screaming, "There is no such creature known to exist!" Following that, the online free preview both tantalized me with Steve's writing style and the characters that I have come to adore, and caused me to be still more unnerved, discovering the 120-foot monster to be a Liopleurodon with a skull in excess of 30 feet! I became confused instantaneously; the series with such an eye to attracting fans of prehistoric aquatic fauna is featuring a grossly paleontologically inaccurate specimen, hyping the Liopleurodon to more than twice the size of what we know for even the largest specimen of this pliosaur? However, with tens of millions of years for this animal to evolve if left undisturbed in a subterranean sea, who is to say that its size couldn't increase? I remained hopeful that Steve would provide an explanation... and provide he did! My one fear and quibble for the book laid to rest in an evolutionarily plausible fashion, I may now go back and reread Primal Waters so that I can fully appreciate that book without being concerned with an inaccurate leviathan of ludicrous proportions!

With "the bad" (if the above worry could even have been considered as much) out of the way, I should move on to the good... which literally is the ENTIRE book. Hell's Aquarium is the singularly most enthralling novel I have read since The Trench, steering the series into uncharted waters of infinite possibility. Angel is back in all her rapacious, cantankerous glory, but the creatures I found myself yearning to read about just as much as Angel were her offspring, particularly her larger two female pups, Belle and Lizzy, referred to by the Tanaka Institute staff as "the sisters". What's compelling about the sisters is that we see them not only as Megalodons but as animals with distinct personalities which make them memorable and enticing for the reader. Long have we seen Megalodons as fiercely territorial and solitary; now we see the sisters in a symbiotic predatory relationship. Belle is the brawn to Lizzy's brain. Lizzy appears strategic and calculating in attacks, while Belle is pure, unbridled primal fury.

All of the main characters are back, with David now 20 years old and donning the mantle of main protagonist (Jonas coming in at a close second). This book seems to groom David as the Taylor we'll be following most closely in future books as Jonas advances in years and becomes less capable of taking on these apex predators and coming out unscathed. A glut of new and memorable characters are present, including bi-polar Monty whom David befriends on his trip to Dubai, their relationship echoing that between Jonas and Mac. From the Monterey bay to Dubai, this book ceaselessly churns out intrigue and action in a manner that fans of the series will swarm about as if it were chum!

Every Chapter Is A Killing

If you're into sci-fi, sea monsters, or just plain adventure, `Hell's Aquarium' is a novel with non stop action which gives the audience what it wants. Plenty of sea monsters and most importantly sea monsters eating people!

The plot: The novel actually focuses on two parallel stories about two sea monster aquariums. As you might know, Dubai is currently trying to outdo the world in tourist attractions. They're plan is to release a Jurassic Park style aquarium. The big problem is that they can't grow the sea monsters in a test tube, they have to go out and catch them! We'll that's a lot more fun than `West World' rehashed.

Of course as anyone who's into cryptozoology knows sea monsters really do exist. (Or rather we want them to exist.)

The Dubai royal family has the perfect crew for the job. The Taylors. When the Taylors refuse their money they find other ways to "persuade" the Taylors.

But that's just one part of the story. At the same time the other Taylors are in sunny California running their own sea monster theme park. Perhaps this is the real Hell's Aquarium.

The Talyors run a Sea World like theme park with live shows not featuring a killer whale but a 72 foot megalodon named Angel, and her five daughters. How dangerous is this. As I said about every ten pages or every live show at least one innocent person dies a bloody death. Of course this only boosts the park's popularity!

The Talyors seem grief stricken by each death but continue to keep the park open claiming they can't simply release these monsters into the wild.

If the Talyors don't have enough problems the park is under attack by eco-terrorists whom want to "free the megaladons." Take a wild guess what happens to them!

`Hell's Aquarium' one of the few books which can truly be called non stop action. There's so much going on! People are being eaten left and right whether they're hunting sea monsters or trying to play with them.

Like most best selling authors, Steve Alten's writing style and character development is so-so. His true genius is in giving the readers what they want. He focuses very little on the human characters, the Taylors could switch to the Smiths half way through an it wouldn't matter. Alten focuses on the sea monsters, the real stars of the story! Good!

Cryptozoologists or paleontologists, will be very impressed with Alten's wide menagerie of prehistoric monsters. The novel is also illustrated while really helps. This would make a great Hollywood film.

Angels are watching

Let me just tell you that this is a true story and the author changed the names to protect people's identities, but I personally know one of the characters in the book, that person told me about the book so I bought it. I have to divulge that because I usually don't buy books in this genre so I might not be the best person to give a review as opposed to say, a fan of the genre. I decided to write a review for this book because I noticed no one else had and I know how important reviews are to the success of a book.
This book is about a woman who loses her adult daughter, the grief she experienced, and how she got through the pain through the help of her guardian angels. The author's intention is to help others going through similar losses.
Well what can I say? The book is very sad! But the author finds hope and meaning in the tragedy through her interactions with unseen but very real and loving angels. The author comes to know her daughter is in a better place now. This book will give reassurances to those who have also lost a loved one, and reading about someone else's struggle with grief can remind the reader they're not alone. Also this book is very easy to read.

Looking for angels

Pat Morgan, the author of this book, was jumping through hoops to care for her only daughter, who had contracted the dreaded Super Bug and had no other family close by. Pat also had to stay strong and clearheaded to care for her nonagenarian mother, who lived with her and had Alzheimer's. This book, which in part reads like a journal, among other things highlights the predicament of the Sandwich generation.

When her daughter suddenly died, Pat might have given in to paralyzing grief, but instead she tried every option she could think of to overcome it. She eventually found a holistic path that brought her peace. Readable, informative, and inspiring.

Angels

After hearing Pat Morgan give an emotional presentation about her book, Angel Tracks, I purchased it. I found the book sad, touching and even funny. She has a unique way of telling her story. Her experiences with the loss of her daughter and mother would resonate with many of us. She found solace by tapping into her inner strength aided by her angels---she names them all. I found it to be a story about faith and learning that we can move on after these losses. I wish Pat much success on her new life path.

Better than expected - 3.5 stars

I read the second book in this series first and didn't like the h from this book in that story where she is that h's sister. This is book 1 and starts off with our h, who has a business a 'fixer'. She's had a long term client, the H, who is a bad boy and she no longer deals with his account, her colleague does. They have a bit of a history but never slept together or anything but there was a spark.

This story starts where the H makes the h a business proposal, where if she marries him so that he can seal a deal, he will pay her millions of dollars once they get divorced. I quite like marriage of convenience stories. This one is different because they don't promise never to touch each other, in fact very few details are worked out at all.

I'm left with a few questions and don't think that the author tied this up 100%. However it is a good story with a slightly annoying h. I can see how that escalated into the next book but she was ok here.

I will definitely read the third book when it comes out.

A heroine to be ignored...

I started out liking Amy. I liked her maturity, wit, intuitiveness, and her focus. Two quarters into the story I was more contemptuous of her. I didn't care for her extreme cynicism or hypocrisy--second guessing Ethan's motives, but giving a pass to a man just like him. She was very hard on Ethan throughout the story, but her attraction to him kept her in the game.

The overwrought love scenes were amateurish and unconvincing. The tease factor alone was extreme and overdone. No need to say and do the same things over and over again. See how I just made the same statement in three different sentences? If so, you get my point.

I couldn't stand Amy by the three-quarter point. She was too much. I just wanted her to grow the hell up. When is anyone's motives pure? How could someone so experienced with the motives behind public and personal scandals be so stupidly naive? The character began the book as a self-possessed, adult woman, but ended it an insecure teenaged drama queen.

There were enough errors to make even me take notice past the half-way point. I wouldn't mention them normally, but I hate the Amy character enough to be that petty.

I didn't finish this and here's why. Amy owned a successful business. She helped get politicians, businessmen, celebrities, out of trouble. Ethan was one of her clients. When he proposes to her, a temporary arrangement in order to acquire a business for his company, then offers her ten million dollars if she accepts, she can't pass it up. It would help her business and she has to admit she finds Ethan attractive. They get married then immediately fly out of state to meet with the man whose business Ethan wants to buy. All they have to do is pretend to be in love. HOWEVER, as soon as they land, Ethan gets a mysterious phone call and has to return home to handle another matter. He insists Amy stay and schmooze their host, only its the host's son, Logan who picks her up then tries to "pick her up", if you know what I mean. Her protests about being married fall on deaf ears. HOWEVER, knowing he's making a play for her, she goes with him to a bar. Of course he's flirting and being charming. When he asks her to go to his loft, supposedly with other people too, she's actually thinking about what it would be like to be with him. She's enjoying his coming on to her. This is where she lost me. Totally turned me off. It went against the character the author had portrayed up to that point, a woman who prided herself on her integrity, an astute business person with a good head on her shoulders. Her job was to deflect and diffuse scandals, not participate in one of her own. HOWEVER, that's not all! Just when she's getting ready to leave with Logan, who should conveniently show up but Ethan. And he's upset to find her at a bar with Logan! I would be too! For the life of me, though, I can't understand why at a pivotal point in their relationship would the author suddenly have the hero leave and bring in another man? One the heroine is actually considering going home with? Especially when it seems Ethan has more in mind than their business arrangement. I was totally disgusted and found it impossible to like Amy after that. The scene was completely unnecessary to the telling of the story. There never was a satisfactory explanation for Ethan' s departure, unless it was brought up at the end, and like I said, I didn't finish it.

Idyllic days never last, can opposites learn to live together?

Rat and Shion are trying to learn to live together but it is hard when one party is closed off and distant and the other is a chatterbox with more questions that a child that just learned to say 'why!' This volume starts off much more lighthearted than the previous ones. Shion is learning to live in West Block without depending on Rat for every little thing, he even manages to get his own job! Everything seems to be going well for the duo until Rat gets a letter from Shion's mother and Shion discovers a familiar coat in a store in the West Block.

This series continues to keep me interested! The characters are believable. The storyline moves at a good pace. There is a great mix of humor and seriousness. This continues to be an excellent dsytopian series. I can't wait to see what is next for Rat & Shion!

If dystopian stories are your thing, this is definitely one you should check out!

Wonderful story! weird/cool texture of the book though

Story is Wonderful! Ive already watched the anime twice and read the manga online up to date so I wanted to buy the physical manga. A lot of people hate that in the manga they call Nezumi Rat instead Nezumi and I think they call Inukashi Dog keeper. But I watched the anime in english dub and they called them Rat and Dog Keeper, then I read the manga where they call them Nezumi and Inukashi so I don't really mind. And you know how most manga covers and backs are shiny and slick feeling? this isn't like that is feels like a regular book but not shiny it feels sorta like thin cardboard/paper stuff but doesn't bend as easily as regular manga material. its so cool and unique!

I’m not completely hooked by this series yet, in the “I need the next volume now” way, but I’m definitely interested. I’m very intrigued by where the story is going.

I’m liking Shion. He’s growing closer to both Rat, who’s making it hard, and Dogkeeper, who’s a little uninterested but obviously growing weak against his persistence. Dogkeeper, for instance, gives him a job washing the dogs. Shion is almost adorable at this point. He hasn’t completely won my heart, but his innocence and genuine happiness and do-gooder attitude just about has me. He is really quite cute.

I’m not sure if this series actually goes into yaoi territory, but it’s already seeming right on the edge. There is obviously an attraction between him and Rat. Safu might mess that up, though.

There was a plot twist with Safu in this volume, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I guess I’m just not sold on her yet, though. Still, it left us with a cliffhanger, and is very clearly going to upset Shion.

There’s also some very dangerous things happening behind Shion’s back. Rat has proven that he can be quite the merciless manipulator, in a not-good way. That gives me the feeling that bad things are coming from that side, along with the ones from the government and their bug disease.

I’m enjoying this series so far. The plotlines are getting interesting and dangerous, and I’m also starting to get fond of the characters.

When people go to hell this must be what they are forced to read.

First off I'm not trying to badmouth this book because I didn't put in the effort and got a poor grade. I hold an A in this course. That said, if it's assigned by one of your profs there isn't much you can do to avoid reading it. Good luck.

Every sentence in this book uses 25 words when 3 will do. Every chapter covers enough material to merit 4 or 5 chapters in any other textbook. The writing is convoluted, verbose, and seems to intentionally describe topics and concepts in the most roundabout manner possible. I might understand if this book were assigned to medical students or maybe even law school (there are entire chapters that just list out laws and regulations - makes for some riveting reading material) but I'm just trying to get through a coding certificate.

This is a required textbook for several of my classes for a medical degree. Huge book with a font that should be larger. Very informative but a bit hard to comprehend in some places.

Lark opened her eyes, taking in the dark hotel room illuminatedonly by the moonlight. Sweat beaded around her neck and brow. Hair stuck to thenape of her neck. She sat up and looked around at the barely visible furniture.Movement by the window caught her eye.
    Devon stood at the window, arms crossed overhis chest. His broad shoulders were accented by the bright white of the moon.Lark stared at the fine plains of his bare back. She licked her lips, takinghim all in. She shuddered, recalling the way he'd felt pressed against her--theway his lips had caressed hers a day ago. 
    Lark blinked the images away, thankful for thedarkness that hid the heat creeping across her face. Her throat was parched, andshe pushed the covers back to get a drink of water from the sink. 
    The cool water alleviated some of the heat asit glided down her dry throat. She pushed the wet strands of hair out of herface and walked to the window. Devon hadn't moved. Preston and the three otherguys lay sound asleep on the floor. They'd been kind enough to give her theonly bed.
   Lark joined him at the window. "Do you notsleep?" Her eyes drifted to the door across the street. To think, her sisterwas in that room. Lark wondered if Sarah was okay. Was she sleeping? In pain?Would they hurt her? The list went on and on. 
    "It's my turn to keep watch. Daniel said theywouldn't leave until morning, but I don't want to risk it." Devon looked overat her for a moment. His eyes slipped down to take in her plaid pants before heturned back to the window.
    She'd gone to the store earlier with Preston topick up a few things. They'd both needed the distraction. She normally slept inboy-shorts, but after her run in with Devon the other morning, and consideringshe was sharing a room with all guys, she had thought better.
    "Oh, I didn't realize you guys were keepingwatch. I can keep a lookout if you want to rest."
    "It's okay. Preston will take over in a fewminutes." Devon shrugged. "I'm used to the late nights; it's actually been alittle bit of shellshock to get used to days. As an EMT, I worked the twelvehour night shift. Most incidents happen at night, you get used to being up allnight. My nights off, I usually spent out too. Vincent likes to party. I wentalong for something to do and to keep him out of trouble."
    "I can see that about Vincent. I bet you'veseen some interesting things on your job."
    Devon smiled, the moonlight glittering in hiseyes. "People never cease to amaze you. I've seen the traumatic to thedramatic."
    Lark laughed. "I can imagine. You see storieson the news every so often where someone calls 911 for a cheeseburger, orsomething ridiculous like that."
    "Those are the people who don't understandthe exorbitant bill they get in the mail for our services either," Devonchuckled.
    The smile lit his entire face, giving her arare glimpse of him. Lark wondered what had happened in his past to make him sodistant. Slowly, he seemed to be opening up to her. She hoped he continued todo so.
    "I'm sure you get interesting characters inThe Cookie Jar."
    "Yeah, about half my customers are regulars.It's kind of nice getting to talk to everyone. You'd be amazed what people tellyou, though. I've heard so many things that I really didn't want to know." Larkplaced her hands on the windowsill, leaning forward. She peered out the sheercurtains. Her thoughts drifted back to Sarah and Emily; at least they hadeach other.
    "They won't hurt her."
    Lark looked up at him, surprised. It took amoment to register his words. She nodded and sighed, her eyes darting back tothe door across the street. The road seemed to stretch endlessly. It felt likemiles separated them instead of mere feet. She would feel better once she couldhold Sarah in her arms again.
    "Have you ever thought about becoming adoctor or a nurse? You know, taking your training to the next level?" Larkneeded a distraction and she was curious about Devon.
    "My bedside manner sucks."
    Lark met his smile. "But would you?"
    Devon leaned forward before rocking back onhis heels. "I don't know. I never really thought about it."
    Lark nodded. "I always enjoyed baking. Inever in my life thought I'd own my own bakery. But I couldn't imagine doinganything else now."
    "I do like the blueberry muffins."
    "You guys seem to have a sweet tooth. Well,actually, I've noticed you guys eat just about anything." 
    Devon laughed. "It's our metabolism.Especially when we shift a lot, it makes us hungry."
    "I can tell." Lark looked over at him. "Doyou do it often? Shift, I mean?"
    "I try to once a day. Some days, like when I worked,I couldn't. The wolf is a part of who we are. Shifting is important for ourmental wellbeing. As a rule, we try to shift three to four times a week. Theonly exception is when women are pregnant. The shift is harmful to the fetussince the body transforms from a human into a wolf."
    "Does it hurt when you change?" Lark couldn'tstop herself from asking.
    "It's a pleasure pain."
    "I imagine it's exhilarating."
    "You really are genuinely interested, aren'tyou?" Devon turned to her, eyes locked on hers.
    Lark swallowed at the intensity of his gazeand lowered her eyes to the floor. "I...I'm not trying to be rude."

Two stars is rather harsh, but the mistakes just kept coming.

I can't believe so many people like this book. The plot is fine, although predictable, but there are many books out there like this, so that's not really a problem. One of the beefs I have with this book is the author seems to have written what she wanted in each scene, totally ignoring the fact that scenes have to make sense when viewed in sequence. For example, Lark gets to her bakery at 6 AM to open at 7 AM. How on Earth is this woman expected to do enough baking in ONE HOUR to have enough product so the cases have at least something in them at opening? It's ridiculous! And then her closing time is 8 PM. Can't see why a bakery would be open until 8 at night, but maybe they do things differently there. But then Lark has to drive home, jump in bed, and get up again early enough to get to the bakery at 6 AM. It's pretty much nuts. And to top it all off, we get to read about her doing office work, and her packing boxes with product, but we never read about her actually baking at all. This is like an episode of Bonaza, where the Cartwrights were either driving a wagon to town to see Sheriff Coffee, or sitting down to dinner cooked by Hop Sing. They were supposed to be ranchers, but they never did any ranch work to speak of.

Second problem is silly use of vocabulary. For example, Lark likes the look of Devon's shoulders. So she likes the "girth" of his shoulders. No! She doesn't like the circumference of his shoulders! No one thinks about the "circumference" of someone's shoulders, they look at their width. You don't have to have the thesaurus open beside you to find a new way to describe something. This happened quite a bit in the book.

Final problem, and this one drives me crazy, is lip biting, biting the lips, chewing the lips. Constantly. I think this is supposed to mean the woman is thinking. She was even lip biting during a pasta dinner at a restaurant! How many of you have ever stopped and had a good lip biting session in the middle of dinner? You can convey a woman is thinking about something without having her chew her face off every few minutes. Sheesh. Romance writers use that idea a lot, and it's lazy writing.

Two stars is rather harsh, but the mistakes just kept coming. A good editor would go a long ways to making the book more readable.

Cliffhanger Part of a series

The story line was good, so was the writing with the exception of a few editing misses.The story kept my interest. Why did I give only two stars then when I did enjoy the book. The book just ended, with no resolution to any of the issues brought forward in the book. Just Bam..done!. Some may call this a cliff hanger book or a "to be continued" . Definitely not a stand alone unless you like your ending with no resolutions. Apparently this is part of a series with resolution possibly in later books. Not sure. I usually read reviews before deciding on a book, I certainly must have missed any reviews stating it was a cliff hanger or that you need to read the rest of the series to get answers. Had that been mentioned in other reviews I read I would not have bothered beginning this book.

WARNING, this was a huge cliffhanger! I CAN NOT believe Mrs. Shaw did that to me!!!
Whatever.
So....I absolutely loved this book to pieces. I would most definitely recommend this AMAZINGLY FABULOUS book to anyone and everyone. I can already tell this series is going to be a great one. The only issue I had (it's a itty bitty one) was I thought it was a bit rushed at the end and I would love to read more about the two main characters in this book, but since it's one of those that each book is about another couple, it doesn't bother me that much.
Go buy this book. Seriously. Go buy this book.
