“Injustice: Gods Among Us Volume 1” Takes Readers Beyond the Game

DC Comics takes the story from one of its most popular video games and puts it on the printed page with the graphic novel collection "Injustice: Gods Among Us Volume 1." I don't play games, so I had no idea what to expect from this prequel. What we get is an elaborate "Elseworlds"-type tale that shows us an alternate take on the characters we know and love.
After Superman is tricked into killing Lois Lane by hallucination-inducing Kryptonite, he wages unforgiving war on any and every villain, warlord, or crooked world leader he finds. Gone is the Man of Steel who believed in justice through the judicial system. He has reached his capacity for compassion and now immediately kills any evildoer on sight.
Things get more dangerous when Superman begins putting together a Justice League of sorts who agree with his new-found stance of zero tolerance. Batman must form his own group of super heroes willing to go up against the Man of Steel and his gang and show the world that not all super heroes have lost their sense of morality.
Writer Tom Taylor takes the world of "Injustice: Gods Among Us" and expands it past the barriers of the video game it's based on. Although I steer clear of alternate universe storylines, I have to say this one kept my attention and was a lot of fun. It's interesting to escape the confines of the DC Universe continuity and let the chips fall where Taylor wills them to.
Several artists worked on "Injustice: Gods Among Us Volume 1." They include Jheremy Raapack, Mike S. Miller, Bruno Redondo, Axel Gimenez, David Yardin, Tom Derenick, Marc Deering, and Diana Egea. Although they each have their own style, they all blend well together and don't really distract from the story. It's interesting to see all the alternate costumes for the different super heroes.
Four variant covers are included as bonus material for "Injustice: Gods Among Us Volume 1." All of them were used for various printings and one as a game variant cover. They're not much, but the illustrations are striking and frame-worthy.
As far as content is concerned, I would rate "Injustice: Gods Among Us Volume 1" as PG-13. There's the usual violence that comes along with super hero comics and some language. Of course, some of the female characters wear revealing clothing, which is to be expected.
"Injustice: Gods Among Us Volume 1" is a thrilling graphic novel that removes the reader from the confines of the canonical DC Universe we're served up every month. Although I rarely find it necessary to veer off the beaten path, this is the perfect example of an instance where I'm glad I did. Even if you don't play video games, there's plenty to enjoy in the prequel to the best-selling game.

Delightfull new spin on a Justice Leauge story

I must say I was pleasantly surprised, one of the few times when something lived up to my expectations. I bought this book on a whim, I never played the game but the story fascinated me (and so too did the pretty pictures, lol) Now I will preface by saying that if you are a superman fan you may not think so highly of this story, because it doesn't honor that superman mythos most everyone has grown to love, but I assure it makes for a really exciting and interesting read. without giving too much away....This story brings up a lot of ethical questions particularly from a standpoint of absolute power, and this my friends is the embodiment of absolute power corrupting absolutely, what do you do when one day becomes enough is enough, when everyone on earth is made to agree and live in harmony side by side by force. This is an excellent new take for a graphic novel that I for one enjoyed reading and oh P.S. I'm a big superman fan but what made this not off putting to me was the story and the fact that I'm even bigger Batman fan and he is just badass on here :)

Injustice: Gods Among Us Vol. 1

After hearing good things about this story, I decided to order it and glad I did. I liked the idea of a sort of "what if" scenario if the super powered heroes decided to take more control over the planet. When Superman, under control of Jokers Kryptonite poison gas, takes a life, he "snaps" and then crosses that line himself. Superman then orders a world wide ceasefire, and if people do not listen, they will be forced to. Other heroes join Superman, some believing that the world should be, for the lack of a better word, ruled, by those that can best protect it. While other heroes believe they don't have the right to go that far just because they have powers. This breaks allegiances, and even friendships among the worlds most popular heroes. Without spoiling anything, my favorite part of the book has to be when Aquaman tried to show Superman that his "orders" do not pertain to him, and show the surface world just who really has the most power. The way Superman and his allies decided to handle this was a surprise to me, and very entertaining to read and see. I highly recommend this book. If you're worried that it might be an exact book version of the game, it is not! Just like movies change things from the books they are based on, this book changes things the way the game did it. If you liked the game, you'll like the book! If you like many different DC characters, (there are a ton in this book, such as, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Cyborg, Aquaman, Shazam, Robin, Nightwing, Green Arrow, Joker, Harley Quinn, Catwoman..just to name a few) chances are they are in this story, or will be in future volumes! Give this one a try, you won't be sorry you did.
