More than I expected

Raife is a Drachon, an Arcane species that is dying out because of their particular need for their mates. If they don't mate and get their mate pregnant after maturity, they go insane and die. He knows who his mate is, but Katya is a Sanguen, a type of vampire, and his blood could be poison to her. When he nearly mates her one night, he knocks her out (gently, no force involved) takes her to her uncle and leaves with the man's promise that he will find Katya a mate far away from him.

Katya doesn't know what happened. One minute she is with a man she trusts with her life and the next she awakened in a lab being experimented on. She can't believe it when after a year of torture she is thrown in a cage with Raife and expected to mate with him. With the instinct driving them both, how can she resist? But with his betrayal, how can she give in?

There are a lot of twists and turns in this story, and it certainly kept me reading. The second characters are intriguing and I can't wait to read about Tag, which is her next book. The story moves along at a good pace and the writing was good, with not a lot that made me scratch my head and wonder what that was about, or that forced me to stop the flow of the story because of some jarring dialog or error. Trust me, I've read some books like that and they drove me nuts. There was good chemistry between Raife and Katya, but I sometimes felt that so much was going on in the story it got lost in the weeds and fizzled at times. I would have also liked to have seen the author start the book with the scene that started the whole misery, the night Raife got his mating mark. It felt like a part of the book was missing.

Overall, the book was an excellent read and I would highly recommend it, along with the first in the series "More than Blood"

Whiny heroine grated on my nerves.

I thought the first book in this series had promise. The sex scenes were steamy and the hero of this story, presented in the first book, got my interest, so I gave this one a try. It was the heroine (I've already forgotten her name!) who annoyed the heck out of me. I found her personality so irritating I didn't have any interest in her story line. This author can write, it's not a horrible book, just didn't do it for me. The hero was an engaging character, well drawn. But the damn heroine and her "woe is me" victim mentality to some of the situations faced were frustrating. She tried to starve herself because she was afraid of herself....face-palm.

irritating to no end

The characters are so irritating. The male is such a neanderthal, the female so stubborn, it makes no sense. How is is that the drachon species is so fierce and protective when is comes to mates and children, but the main female character would starve herself and her baby because she was scared of herself? If her basic instinct is protect her mate by going into a rage and killing her enemies, wouldn't she be just as protective of her baby?

Ridiculous characters. I only finished it because I can't leave a book unfinished.

The haughty ruler of Didd, King Derwin (who would foolishly go on to summon green goo from the sky in his later years) showed the first signs of his silly self-importance back in this 1938 Seuss classic, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins.

When Bartholomew visits town one day, selling cranberries at the market for his parents, the King's procession screeches to a halt in front of him; King Derwin then leans out of his coach, demanding to know why Bartholomew hasn't respectfully removed his hat. "But, Sire, my hat is off." He shows the king the hat in his hands that he's just doffed, but sure enough, another identical one sits atop his head. He takes that hat off only to reveal another... and another, and another, and another. Poor Bartholomew goes through 45 hats, then 136, then 233, as the angry king calls in every expert in the kingdom, from Sir Snipps the haberdasher to the Father of the Father of Nadd. In the end, Bartholomew barely gets away with his head (forget about the hats!), as Seuss spins this weird and wacky tale, a strange thing that "just happened to happen and was not very likely to happen again." (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

The Bartholomew Cubbins books are examples of Dr. Suess's early children's stories ("The 500 Hats..." having been published in 1938), and thus they lack the sing-song poetry and and bright colors of his later works. They are my favorite Suess books, however, as they speak to any child who is frustrated and put upon by adults who talk down to them. The theme of The 500 Hats... is as relevant, if not more so, than it was when the book was originally published.
The magically re-appearing hats is frustrating to bartholomew, but to the adults around him it is a terrifying and disturbing thing, not because it is dangerous but because it threatens their sense of what should be. The interventions they try range from the simple (calling in "experts" like a tailor, wise men and magicians) to the desperate and frightening (ordering Bartholomew's head and the offending hats cut off). Throughout it all, bartholomew's desires and needs are forgotten, and he is looked upon merely as an extension of this "problem." Also involved is the king's nephew, a "normal" child who spearheads the movement to do away with Bartholomew, not out of fear or concern but out of simple spite. In the end, however, the magic and wonder of the event is recognized and celebrated rather than condemed.
I would particualrly recommend this book to parents of children with learning disorders. The themes descibed above would be particularly familiar, and the conclusion especially satisfying. The grim sections of the book (such as when the king orders bartholomew's execution) should not scare anyone off from what is a wonderful and inspiring story.

An enduring classic and a great read-aloud

This volume differs from most of the Dr. Seuss books we are familiar with in that the text is unrhymed, and the book takes a good 20 minutes to read aloud. This is no liability; the story's interest develops immediately, and never lags. There is an impressively idiosyncratic cast of characters to enjoy and dramatize, and Seuss's use of language is a joy. Bartholomew himself is a gutsy, honest kid without a trace of arrogance or swagger. In addition, the drawings are more detailed than in later books, and really exhibit Seuss' s skill as a graphic artist, along the lines of Robert McCloskey's Make Way for Ducklings. I loved this book as a child, and my children adore it now. As enduring children's literature, I would place it above Cat in the Hat and Horton Hears a Who any day!

Can Bartholomew Remove His Hat?

Bartholomew Cubbins, lowest of the subject of King Derwin has gone into town to sell some cranberries for his parents. When the king passes by, he doffs his hat, only have the king stop and accuse him of not taking his hat off. Surprised to find it is true, he takes his hat off, only to find a third hat on his head. The king has him arrested and begins trying to figure out ways to keep the hat off. His wise men and magicians are certainly no help. Meanwhile, Bartholomew must figure out a way to get his hat to stay off his head before the consequences become drastic.
This is an early Dr. Seuss book, and a lesser known of his works. Still, it tells a fun story about a boy in trouble for something he didn't do. Everyone can relate to that. Even when the king becomes obsessed with the hat, Bartholomew never looses his respect for the king.
This doesn't have the charm, creativity, or poetry of some of his other works, but is still fun for kids because of the absurd length they reach to try to get rid of that hat.

Cripes!

Cripes, this one was a stinker! Why the hell is it damn near impossible to find a decent Wolverine book these days?!

How about this for pointless: Wolverine shows up for no reason on an island in the Savage Land along with Shanna the She-Devil, they fight a bunch of dinosaurs and some apes, Hulk shows up for no reason at the end, and a giant alien blasts off into space, the end. Cripes, what rubbish!

The story is practically irrelevant as this book is basically a showcase for Frank Cho’s art. It ticks all the boxes for stuff he loves to draw: scantily clad, curvy women, tick. Dinosaurs, tick. Apes/monkeys, tick. Kill Island (very creative title) may be all about the art but still, the story could’ve been better. Instead it’s mostly Wolverine and Shanna doing their “comedy” routine which consists of Wolverine saying something like “we gotta stay quiet and still” and then Shanna doing the opposite or Wolverine saying “no sudden movements” and then Shanna falling down from a tree. Fighting ensues. Repeat.

AHAHAHA oh my sides, they have split. Frank Cho’s “comedy” is about as advanced as a Looney Tunes cartoon. My favourite “joke” is Wolverine’s side constantly being pierced by arrows and him muttering “aw cripes, it’s never going to heal properly!” Wah-wah-waaaaaaah. Wolverine also says “cripes” a lot for some reason.

Another character, Amadeus Cho, magically appears on the island (I’m not sure the whole random teleporting thing was ever fully explained) who I know nothing about except that he’s Iron Man without the armour. No, not Tony Stark because Cho can blast stuff with his hands, fly, he’s got a personal forcefield and a chatty AI called Calvin, but I cared so little about this book and the character that I’m not even going to do the bare minimum of research by googling the character’s background. His whole deal seems to have been to repeat this one joke about him wanting to find out the score of the Superbowl and then he discovers his team didn’t win! AHAHAHA…

Hulk’s whole appearance is predicated around Cho doing some physical comedy which again reads like a pre-teen’s idea of “comedy” as Hulk is swatted like a fly by a giant alien and lands in the mouth of a massive fish. And Wolverine says “cripes”. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! These are “jokes”, guys.

Cho’s art on the whole is good but his depictions of women is about as derivative as they get. Shanna is slinking around in a fur bikini and thong the whole time and the only other women who appear are brainless sex slaves for Wolverine wearing pieces of string and eye patch-sized clothing. So to see some great imagery of Wolverine fighting dinosaurs and giant apes in the jungle, you’ve got to see Cho’s masturbatory fantasies first. Of course all the women are barbies with tiny waists, massive boobs, etc. because it’s a Frank Cho book.

Kill Island is an incredibly boring, incredibly contrived story about nothing that reveals that Cho may be an accomplished artist but he’s not a writer at all.

Good Guilty Pleasure Read

I've never been a huge Wolverine fan - he's become kind of a joke over the last couple of decades - but I was sampling all of the new Marvel NOW! titles and I couldn't help but enjoy this one. This is very much a "guilty pleasure" kind of read, but that's one of the things that makes this title as a series so refreshing. Different creative teams telling short arcs that don't feel the pressure to tie into current crossovers or continuity allow for more freedom... and more fun. This first arc, written and illustrated by Frank Cho, is just that: fun. This is Wolverine, in the Savage Land, fighting dinosaurs alongside Shanna the She-Devil, whose leopard bikini leaves little to the imagination. I remember a lot of reviews dismissing this as juvenile fantasy, but really, not every comic book can be Watchmen. Lighten up, have some fun, and sink your claws into a roaring good time. (The upcoming Volume 2, by the way, collects the Zeb Wells / Joe Madureira arc, which is even cooler.) I much prefer this to the Cornell / Davis Wolverine title, which lost me after only a few issues. This series has a nice "tune in, tune out" format that doesn't require reading every issue - just go for the artists or writers you like, you can leave the rest (like the recent Jock storyline, which was awful).
