Love for Christ's Church

What a gift to the church! Scholars from different denominational backgrounds join together in unity to discuss and define "church" from a biblical and theological perspective. From Paul House walking through the Old Testament teachings on the people of God to Chris Morgan speaking about how the church relates to God's glory, this book is a remarkable well from which all Christians can drink deeply. Where else can a Christian enter into a conversation with top scholars like David Dockery and Steve Wellum to discuss how the Bible speaks of Christ's church? Buy it! Read it! And renew your love for Christ's church.

Excellent resource for Christians to study

This was very refreshing read. Where there is often so much strife and competition in the Christian community, books like this give me hope because of the incredible unity and evangelical spirit of the various authors as they work together. You have different authors from different denominations coming together to talk about the importance of the Church in their various fields; I loved it! I felt like it was also very readable and it kept my interest. Every chapter explores the concept of the Church from a slightly different angle, but they all tie together extremely well. I would recommend this book to anyone desiring to know what is at stake and how important it is that Christians understand the nature of the Church.

the material can feel more like a summary of the book with all the life ...

This book first looks at how the church is described and depicted through the Bible (1.OT 2.Gospels 3. Acts/Revelations 4. Pauline Epistles 5. General Epistles) and then moves onto larger themes of a theology of the church (6. how the church has changed through history (last 2000 years), 7. 5 theologically rich words that describe what the church is 8. The church and God's glory 9. Mission of the church.
The first half of the book is an example of biblical theology...looking at a theme of the Bible and following through the descriptions of it in the bible to get a fuller picture. So, it begins with God's relationship with Israel and progresses to the Gospels (where little is directly said about ekklesia, though we can gain a lot from how Jesus treats the his community and disciples and what he expects from them) and through the rest of the NT. Each article is written by a different author and I think it often falls into a danger that is present in biblical theology...dry descriptions. BT doesn't always fall into this--it can be well written (D.A. Carson's writings), but unless an NT scholar has a real knack for engaging writing, the material can feel more like a summary of the book with all the life dripped out of it. It doesn't have to be that way...I think the problem comes about from simply writing out a list of biblical references about the church in paragraph form. A list would accomplish just as much unless the author wants to somehow connect it to how the church can live out the NT descriptions today (which, had there been more of this, would have been appreciated).
The second half of the book are a few themes connected to the first half via a very brief history of the church. I found chapters 7 and 8 the best, especially the emphasis in chapter 7 by Stephen Wellum, where, as I took it, we need to be careful not to be too short sighted in regards to the church. We can concentrate so much on ecclesiology and forms and ways of church that we forget or lose sight of what the church is. But the church is "God's New Temple" and "God's New Humanity"...these are realities that should be digested and so encourage and push us as we go about "doing church". If we forget those realities, we can miss out on a lot of the joy and power that is there, even in the smallest of churches.
I might have enjoyed the last chapter had I not already read through "The Mission of God" by Christopher Wright, whose book made up most of the material here.
In short, there was nothing I really disagreed with per se as a conservative (theologically) evangelical, but the book felt dry aside from an oasis here and there.
