Teenage Whine-fest!!!
By Wendell
This story was okay and not much else, yet it could have been so much more. The beginning really grabs your attention, makes you get comfortable in the chair as you focus on what is going on with this child, Ilan, cast loose in the world alone. Her unintended rescue by Dimmingwood brigands led by Rideon the Red Hand sets the stage for what could have been an engaging and gripping tale. However, after that poignant start, the tale just sort of fizzles like a dud firecracker. Sure, it hisses and smokes a little, but it never really explodes.

The main reason for this was our heroine herself. The author turns Ilan into something of an anti-heroes. Not in the classic mold of Elric of Melnibone or Thomas Covenant, but in the more modern vein of a teenager who feels she is being "mistreated" by life in general. Ilan, therefore, becomes progressively more sulky, whiny, and hateful as the tale goes along. By the end, she spends the majority of her time complaining, insulting her family/friends, and casting them into harms way to further her own ends. Sure, she might feel a moment of remorse occasionally, but a reader never sees any "growing up" on Ilan's part just more immature self-destructive behavior.

How exactly does one WANT to read about that sort of person?

I didn't by the end. Throw in the fact she "stumbles" upon a magic bow, which whispers into her mind how to kill people, and I personally lost interest in seeing what became of little Ilan.

What could have been a fine story of a lost girl growing up into an adult while she overcame obstacles and rediscovered a forgotten past turned into a teen whine-fest.

Decent read, not good enough to read more than once though
By Courtney Buck
I bought this book while it was free. Something to note, I think.

The first thing I noticed (and it almost made me put the book down) was that it was written in first person. Not a problem for some people, I happen to really dislike it, especially in fantasy books, but it is a personal preference so I'm not holding it against the author.

The beginning was strange. We get a page or two of present day, and then we get launched into the past -- literally covering every main event in this girl's life, and present day doesn't resume until the very end. It was off-putting. I kept expecting the flashback to end at some point and it didn't.

The characters to me seemed quite distant. I really struggled to care about the main character at all. Other people lauded her for her flaws -- I thought she had *too* many flaws and no good characteristics that shined to balance it out. She was selfish, mouthy, impulsive, weak and, well, kind of stupid. I enjoyed the portrayal of her as a child, but as she grew up she just soured in my opinion. The only character that really sparked my interest was Hadrian, and he only shows up for a brief, few-page scene. I assume he comes back later, and I may pick up her other books in the series just to see more of him, but I truly hope that the main character does some growing. Quick. I wouldn't have had such a problem with her attitude if it wasn't the *whole book*, leaving me with an abrupt ending. It seems like this was a longer book that was split up into several. An unwise choice, if you ask me.

Technically well-written despite some minor spelling errors and a few awkward sentences here and there, although the story structure in general left a lot to be desired. I was never really drawn in, I kept wondering when something interesting was going to happen. It did, sort of, towards the end (won't spoil anything), but by then it was too little, too late.

A fairly interesting book, despite some rather glaring negatives for me, but I wouldn't read it again.

Don't recommend paying money for this book
By Noel Todd Stafford
In reviewing this book, I hardly know where to start....so I guess I'll start with the lead character.

This book is about a young girl named Ilan who was born with magic in a region where magic is outlawed and magic's users are persecuted for nothing other than their birth. The start of the book tells the harrowing attempt by her parents to arrange for her failed escape from the region. One would think that based on the beginning, Ilan would be a character that you would become invested in and would hope to see succeed. Alas, that is not the case. Ilan turns out to be a naive, rude, hateful, self-centered brat who would have been better off being killed in the first chapter or two. There would be no book had that happened but in retrospect, that would have been a blessing in disguise. I continued reading in the hopes that Ilan would become a more likable character whose future I could come to care about but alas, that turns out not to be the case.

The story is told through the first person perspective of Ilan rather than a third person perspective. This alone places the book at a disadvantage as novels of this genre written in the first person perspective are notoriously difficult to read and tend to make it harder to develop a complex, engaging storyline.

The prose is inconsistent, switching between an older, more refined writing style and a newer, more modern style at random. Combine that with the first person perspective, and you have a book that is a chore to read and not really all that entertaining.

In conclusion, I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to anyone other than perhaps a new author and even then, only as a primer in how not to write a successful novel.
