A wonderful new framework for children's music-theatre!

What a wonderful new framework for children's music theater! "Vania and the Open Windows" provides the script and a beautiful message of open-minded experience -- and WE provide the music - the music that moves US, whatever instrument WE can play, at OUR level of playing! What a great idea!
In "Vania and the Open Windows," playwright Mercedes Gómez Benet creates a wonderful new form of music-theater collaboration between writer and performers -- and makes it possible for children to create music-theater using the music they already know, that they can already play on the instruments they already have!
It suddenly opens up a whole new way of creating music-theater: Instead of 'recreating' and learning new music required by the script, each group of performers is encouraged to create or choose their own music, based on suggestions by the author, who is a musician herself. The suggestions are for 'types' of music, or music that evokes certain feelings, not specific pieces (except in one case) - so it also encourages performers to understand what kinds of music evoke what types of experience in stories.
The result is that the method of putting the play together enhances the message of the play itself - which is an inspiring story of one girl's deep connection to music, of new ways of hearing, based on the real-life experience of musician Evelyn Glennie. That means the experience of producing and performing the play becomes a part of that message, and deepens the impact of that message - not just on the audience, but maybe more importantly, on the children who will perform it. What a wonderful concept!
It's like half-play and half-game, a wonderful structure for learning to combine the music you know with a new story to create instant music-theater! And the essentil cast is small, but infinitely expandable, so groups of all sizes can perform it.
I can imagine children all over the world creating new versions of this musical-theater piece, and because each performance can use completely different music, each performance can be completely different - and can highlight the talents and skills of each unique group of players! I can imagine teachers using it in schools, children's theater groups perfoming it, families using it for fun, church groups, theater troups, - and beause of its simplicity -- children simply taking the story and performing it themselves. An amazing play inspired by a true story

Every little girl has a big dream created in her mind that she tries to complete during her time in the spotlight. For that, she needs a lot of hard work, and a huge willpower, because the path she has chosen is not as easy as it seems. Talent-that is the very beginning. Vania is gifted for music, and is a wonderful musician, as she goes by her heart and soul and does what makes her feel herself. And what happens when she runs into an undefeatable impediment which crushes her dream in peaces? How can she run over that barrier and continue her path to the one thing that makes her truly happy? This story reminds us how much creativity is important, and that as long as you follow your heart, it will lead you to the right route. I think that this play is wonderful for the children who play in it, expressing their own talent and creativity, learning about the connection of music with emotions, atmosphere and personality. Also, it is great for the audience, watching and thinking about all the challenges of life that can happen to anyone, and inspiring them to try to find a solution for any problem that they might encounter. It also teaches children to understand different, and to help friends. This play provides music teachers with an opportunity to work with the group of students of different age and level of playing in a creative, educating and inspiring way that will be fun for everyone.

Heartwarming story -- great work for musical childen's theater!

Mercedes Gomez Benet has created a beautiful story about overcoming life's unknown challenges. Vania, who loves music, is faced with permanent hearing loss. The story captures the essence of finding new ways to learn how to hear through movement and feeling vibrations. Students of any age can create the different types of music needed through the pieces they already know. The author's suggestions are very helpful and highlight the many types of compositions from different cultures that can be used to dramatize the story. Above all, the joy of creative music-making and dancing provide the framework for learning to "hear" in a different way. Being open to new possibilities and different ways of looking at things make this story very uplifting and compelling for the times we live in.
