Cicero's prosecution of Verres

Cicero was passionate about preserving the Roman Republic. Thus, he felt the duty to extirpate a most dangerous idea that was spreading at the time (and with some good reason): that a wealthy man, no matter how guilty of immense crimes, would not be accounted guilty. Enter Verres, most corrupt governor of Sicily, guilty of theft, embezzlement of public funds, plundering and hence immensely wealthy (= able to buy the favor of just about anyone in Rome). Cicero's speeches, and his cleverness in avoiding a delay of the trial, brought about an amazing success. The defending lawyer, Hortensius (perhaps the only orator Cicero felt could compare to himself) recommended that Verres leave Rome. Which ke promptly did, less than 9 days after Cicero's speeches. Read this book, you can't regret it. The latin part is good, with dictionary feature to help those of us who haven't got their Latin so fresh in our minds.
