Surprisingly Good

Media books based on movies, in my experience, are really hit and miss. The problem I have with them is that so many are obviously written directly off the script.
In 'The Crown and the Dragon' the writer does not seem to have been forced into that, and the book really shines because of it. It is well written, really well thought out, and engaging. I picked up this book at a convention in Utah and haven't regretted the time I spent reading it. The story is solid, the dialogue is extremely well executed, and the action in fun and fast paced.
I recommend picking it up and giving it a read, and I am preordering the movie because of this book.

The Crown and The Dragon: The Paladin Cycle

I enjoyed this book very much. I had an opportunity to evaluate this book last summer. In some ways it was very difficult to do so. While I'm normally very focused on the details of the line and the continuity, I kept getting distracted. It was just TOO doggone INTERESTING. The characters dragged me, seduced me into their stories and the plot. The blend of good and evil was skillfully done - particularly on the characters' own internal struggles. This is not only a quality book. But more importantly it is very satisfying read.

A fun and worthy read

Full disclosure up front: I know the author. I became aware of this book through social media and picked up a copy for my Kindle.
Pleasant surprise: It's actually quite good.
The Crown and the Dragon tells the story of Ellen of Adair, a young woman on a quest to rebuild an ancient relic and save her wartorn homeland. Along the way she enlists the help of Aedin Joris, though it's not clear that either of them are thrilled with the arrangement. Along the way Aedin and Ellen face off against armies, outlaws, supernatural terrors, and a really big dragon. And occasionally each other. The strength of the novel lies in the relationship between Aedin and Ellen, which elevates the material above a simple MacGuffin hunt. Their relationship is alternately challenged and strengthened by the various adversaries they face and follows a meaningful and satisfying arc.
I also enjoy that the world of the Crown and the Dragon feels lived in and real. There are bits of history, passing references to groups of people and hints of political complexities that suggest a larger story than the one being told. Robin Hobb has perfected this sort of world-building - a minor character in one novel may give rise to a twelve hundred page trilogy down the road. By the same token, I expect there's much of Deira (past, present, and future) left to be explored.
And finally, I've got to commend the author for his craft. In the fantasy genre bad writing is too often tolerated in favor of an epic story (see Sara Douglass). Here the writing seems effortless - engaging, descriptive, non-repetitive and frequently funny. And if you're one of those people who "hears" what you read it your head, there's a nice rhythm to it.
All in all a fun and worthy read. Looking forward to exploring Deira again in the future.
