Michael Olive has been researching military history for decades, with a focus on tanks and aircraft. He lives in Trail, British Columbia. Robert Edwards, a retired U.S. Army armor officer who led a scout platoon, has taught at West Point and is the author of Scouts Out (978-0-9117-1311-5). He has also translated numerous books from German into English. He lives in Navarre, Florida. Fascinating Photo-Guide to Life on the Russian Front!

The experiences of the German Army during their first winter in Russia have always interested me. Images of poorly clothed Wehrmacht landsers struggling to survive in unbelievably frigid conditions proved a fascinating contrast to earlier ones of victorious, seemingly invincible German forces driving into Mother Russia. For that reason, I was delighted to come across Michael Olive and Robert Edwards' FIRST WINTER ON THE EASTERN FRONT, 1941-1942, a rich, wide-ranging photo-guide to that time-period.

Part of Stackpole Books' MILITARY PHOTO SERIES, the Olive/Edwards book offers up 192 pages of photographs depicting life - and death - on the Russian Front shot by various German troopers. Hundreds of fairly well-captioned images show the Germans dressed in a variety of uniforms and improvised outfits coping with Father Winter, gobbling down chow, standing guard duty, manning posts, on the march, posing with tanks/artillery pieces/aircraft, relaxing in huts/buildings, etc.

An eight-page color insert features German and Russsian uniforms, weapons, equipment, etc.

Since this is a photo book, text is limited to an introductory chapter and one on Cholm and Demjansk.

I found FIRST WINTER ON THE EASTERN FRONT an interesting look at the German experience of waging war in Russian. It's a useful, visual 'how-it-was' guide that compliments so many fine Russian Front histories. Recommended.

A very interesting book

This book is part of the Stackpole Military Photo series. Like the other books in the series, this one is chock-full of photos, in this case, photos of the Wehrmacht in Russia during the winter of 1941-42. The pictures are quite excellent, clear and interesting, and presented in either half-page or whole-page sized. The underlying captions are generally quite interesting and informative.

As an added bonus, the middle eight pages are filled with color pictures of actual German and Russian personal equipment from the era.

Overall, I must say that I found this to be a very interesting book. The pictures are very good, and cover a wide range of subjects, and the explaining captions are well-written. If you are interested in the life of common German soldiers in Russia during the winter of 1941-42, then you will appreciate this book. I highly recommend it!

Many interesting photos, most of which I had never seen before. Little text on operations or tactics.

Lots of quite fascinating photos, but little text discussing the war during the winter of 1941 / 1942. You won't learn much about either German or Soviet strategic decisions, operations, or tactics from this book, but that probably isn't the purpose of the book anyway. The photos do a good job, I thought, of showing what combat was like during that first winter.

"The force won't tolerate maverick officers."

The hunt for a serial killer is on in the small town of Woolsmarsh. The Incident Room is full of detectives eager for a quick arrest. But Geraldine Steel, recently promoted to Detective Inspector, has been warned by her superior to play it by the book. She has a reputation for being something of a maverick. Not a team player.

Geraldine combines a strong intuitive streak with a workaholic temperament. She's often still on the case while the rest of the team is sleeping. She'll show up at work in the middle of the night to take one more look at the transcripts of phone messages and interviews, searching for a missed clue.

Both the leader of the investigation and the main character are female, which allows the author to explore the challenges women face dealing with brutal crimes and a brutal job.

The plot moves right along, with an interesting twist at the end.

I found Cut Short an absorbing read. I wouldn't consider it in a league with Ruth Rendell's psychological thrillers (as the jacket copy suggests). But if you'd enjoy a fast-paced police procedural featuring a woman police officer in a contemporary British setting, Cut Short might be just the thing.

Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel leaves her old life behind when she relocates to a rural area, including a failed romance. Expecting her job to be less stressful as a part of the mobile Murder Investigation Team in Woolmarsh, Steel has barely gotten settled when a shocking murder sends the team into action. Under the stewardship of DCI Kathryn Gordon, Steel is conscious of her role as a senior detective, the majority of the team being male. But Geraldine is a go-getter, which certainly has contributed to the demise of her relationship; in essence, Geraldine is married to the job. Mostly, that's a safe place for this driven protagonist, her single-minded attention to detail the reason for her success. The loneliness that Steel suffers along the way is the price she is willing to pay.

The strangulation murder of a helpless young girl in Woolmarsh Park creates havoc in the neighborhood, the police- or "filth" as some choose to call the authorities- are determined to turn over every rock to find this killer. While Russell's driven Detective Inspector reflects a serious work ethic and the tedium of real investigation, it is the killer who brings another level of horror to this tale. Living in his own universe, with a twisted and disturbed perspective of the world, the killer is compulsive, increasingly violent and comfortable with being overlooked by passersby, a quality that allows him to pass, unnoticed, sneaking up behind helpless victims, overpowering them as he snuffs out their lives. A faceless murderer nobody remembers- the murder squad is frustrated at every turn, unable to find any links to identify a suspect as one murder after another terrifies the public.

The supporting characters are quirky, part of the fabric of this quietly stunning thriller, a young Detective Sergeant who sees more than Steel is prepared to deal with, a sleazy boyfriend who beats his girlfriend but stops short of murder and a helpful school teacher whose brush with the killer puts her in grave danger. As the body count rises, Geraldine reverts to her instinct for detail, the odd fact that will lead her directly to the demented killer, perhaps even make her his next victim. A grim and satisfying read, starring a great protagonist. Luan Gaines/2010.

Excellent read

Bought this after seeing crime writer Sam Millar's review of it on New York Journal of Books, a while back. Just got round to reading it. Very fast thriller, and a great, original character. The writing is very strong, and Geraldine Steel is an an arresting female lead (sorry about the pun). Highly recommended. Great for a plane journey.

Words can't describe the Beauty of this book...

I'm literally speechless...and if you know me...that never happens. The storyline captivating and beautiful. It was dark at some points and light and fun at others. I can't remember a time when I went from laughing to tears on a matter of paragraphs.
The writing is absolutely beautiful. The description of emotions is unlike anything I've read before. It took me a little longer than normal to read this book because I kept 're reading paragraphs or conversations because they were so beautifully written. Stunned and in aw are the words that come to mind when I think about the writing in the book.
Brooklyn is my new favorite heroine an Finn I think has surpassed all other book hotties. One of my favorite books is Beautiful Disaster and I shocked myself and my husband when I said I think I like this book better...or maybe tied with it. It's young and fun and sexy and passionate. But it holds true meaning to it and it deals with deep emotions.
The way the author goes from past to present was beautiful. I normally don't like books that jump time but this was amazing. I loved Lexi to. She was funny and strong and such a wonderful friend. I would love there to be a book two of this story. There is so much more that can be written about Brooklyn and Finn. I can't wait to read more from this author. I thank her so much for sharing such a beautiful story with me.

What a great book! Was up late to finish it. Read it all in one day.

Brooklyn was a great female character. She was funny and surprising. Her mental hang ups could be a little frustrating and left you edgy not knowing if she was going to sabotage herself, but most of her doubts were all just her inner musings.

Finn was GREAT. So glad this book didn't deal with any in your face jealousy. I'm getting so tired of books with bad boys who have sex with other girls in their beginnings and have slutty girls causing so much trouble. This one addresses some girls and jealousy but not once does Finn pay any attention to another female. He only has eyes for Bee.

Their love story was beautiful. You're left with knowing these two really loved one another at the end. The violent creepy scenes that involved Bee's stalker were well written. The opening prologue where Bee's mom was murdered brought tears to my eyes. And the epilogue to this book was GREAT! Love and good epilogue:) it was beautiful and sweet and left you smiling!

This book reminded me a lot of Hopeless by Colleen Hoover. I liked that book quite a bit, this one fell short of the mark. This is a stand alone, non-cliffhanger book and I'll try to keep this review with only MINOR SPOILERS.

Brooklyn/Bee is still struggling through life 14 years after her mother is murdered in front of her during a car jacking. She meets a guy named Finn (a tattooed rock star, of course) and begins to heal. Bee has many, many, long, tedious, inner monologues. After awhile, I found myself skimming them because it was just too much. For someone who just wants to blend in and not get noticed, she invites a lot of drama into her life.

Finn is introduced as a completely arrogant douchebag, I hated him instantly. Then he becomes sort of a sappy, overly romantic knight in shining armor. Later (after the truth comes out about how he knows Bee), I just thought of him as a creepy stalker. I'm not sure which character was really him, but I didn't really like any of them. He had many opportunities to come clean about who he was and just kept lying.

There were quite a few things in this book that took me out of the story and made me roll my eyes or say, "Come on!". Bee self taught herself to play the guitar, but hasn't played in years. All of a sudden she's good enough (with no practice) to play in front of a standing ovation crowd. And of course she's an amazing singer. She remembers these long conversations she had with her mom, but no mom would ever have deep philosophical conversations with a six year old child. Bee gets attacked in an alley behind a bar, and even though she's beaten up, nearly raped and may have a broken rib, she's still ok enough to have sex with Finn. Cue my WTF face!

There's a mystery/crime element to the book as well, someone is after Bee. It seems obvious who it would be, but of course the obvious would be too unbelievable. Guess not! The whole reveal of who the villain is and the circumstances of it are just way too crazy. I can't even buy it in a fictional story. And the conversation she has with her dad regarding it (and her history with her dad actually intrigued me, I wish that had been included in the story) just made me roll my eyes even harder.

This is the first book from the author and I think she shows promise, it was well written and the typos/grammar issues were very few. I just need a more believable story.

Many editing mistakes were not corrected by the author or editor. This made it hard for me to enjoy the story as much. I also bought it by mistake. I didn't know there were two books by different authors with the same title. I should have been more careful.

Ugh it's horrible

This novella is not written by an adult. I refuse to accept that it is. The characters are standard boring and childish. Seriously? Laughing when someone falls out of a tree and breaks his back? Or... when someone calls you a name you go no.. take that back???? What's next? Sticking out your tongue? The sex was lame. The behaviour adolescent. No sensuality whatsoever. The language was ya interspersed with the odd intelligent word in the hopes of duping the readers. Ps enigma means riddle... there is nothing romantic or complementary about it. A twenty two year old spending a summer in the woods dropping spiderwebbed branches? If this author is underage than I applaud it, if this is truly an adult than work needs to be done.

Highly Recommended. Perfect Light, Amusing, Engaging Read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and liked everything about it. I was surprised that it got some bad reviews, but not everyone has the same tastes. I thought this book was one of Garwood's best ones and both my husband and I have read it a few times and never got tired of it. I was definitely happy to be able to replace my old, tattered paperback with the Kindle version.

Garwood didn't go into as much historical detail as some historical romance writers, but I didn't notice any glaring anachronisms, either. Garwood's writing mechanics were excellent, as is usual with her books.

I thought the plot was more character driven, with the focus on the developing relationship between the hero and heroine, as opposed to a plot driven story with lots of action. The main protagonists were a slightly eccentric heroine and a gruff hero who didn't know what hit him after he married the heroine. She talks circles around him and his men, and manages to capture their hearts. I enjoyed the back and forth banter between the hero and heroine and found it amusing. I think it's the type of light banter and dialogue reminiscent of the old screwball comedies that one either loves or hates.

I also liked the characterization of the heroine; she had an innocent naivety coupled with native shrewdness and intelligence. Her feelings were easily hurt, but she didn't hold a grudge, had a warm heart and looked for the best in people, sometimes giving them the benefit of the doubt when they didn't deserve it. I didn't feel that she was a "too stupid to live" heroine; she was young, insecure, and was desperate to please her husband's family so they would like her, but she would only be pushed so far.

The hero had been raised as a warrior, believing that showing softer emotions made a leader look weak. He has been raised to believe that a leader had to be an authoritarian figure who gave orders, expected them to be obeyed, didn't give explanations or put up with being questioned, contradicted, or disobeyed. Otherwise, he felt it would make him look like a weak leader and that he would not be respected by his men or clan. When he married the heroine, he intended to remain in control and aloof, and he expected her to obey him at all times, without ever questioning him. It was a pleasure to see him alternately stern, infuriated, bemused, befuddled, aghast, warm and loving, as he and the heroine developed a loving relationship. I didn't think he was a jerk. He seemed to be a product of his time and circumstances as far as his beliefs in how he needed to act, but he had a lot of good qualities. He thought daughters should be treated lovingly and not sold to the highest bidder, that it was the duty of the strong to look after the weak, and that women and children should never be abused. He was loyal to his people, and even as a child, he wouldn't leave the injured behind to save himself. His people were loyal to him and respected him, which was an indication of his character. Even when he thought he should be firm with the heroine, he didn't have the heart to deliberately hurt her feelings, he tried to understand her and he was never abusive. When he did things that upset her, like leaving her belongings behind, it was early in the story when he didn't understand the finer points of communicating with one's wife and not doing things that would upset a wife. He wasn't being mean or sadistic; he just didn't have a clue about being a husband. From the beginning, he started to try to understand what the heroine needed from him and then he made every effort to adjust to marriage and to balance the tenderness of a husband with the firmness of a warrior.

This was a light, enjoyable book that kept me engaged and entertained. When I reread it today, I was in a "hard to please" slump and was having trouble deciding what type of book I was in the mood for. I just wanted something that was not too demanding but not too light, something that would make me smile and put me in a better mood. This book was perfect. I highly recommend this book to others looking for the same qualities in a book.

I absolutely loved this story! This is only the 2nd book I've read of this author. The first was "The Bride", which is a hysterical, gut busting fun read that you won't be able to put down. This book is also a page turner and one you'll want to read it over and over again!

READ THE BOOK NOT THE MOVIE

Honestly by far this is one of the best books I've ever read. Matthew Quick is a sensational author who perfectly captures not only the Philadelphia Eagles fan's lifestyle, but also the lifestyle of a bipolar person. He understood what most bp would feel in certain moments and was able to perfectly display it in his book. I hate to be "that guy" but if you've only seen the movie I beg you to read the book. I get that they aren't able to put every single thing from the book into the movie but really they completely changed the ending because of some of the things they did in this book.
WARNING SPOILERS
1. Nikki isn't supposed to show up to the dance, also there was no bet put in place for them to win
2. At the dance, all the other dancers were supposed to stink and pat/ tif were supposed to get an excellent score
3. Pat was supposed to meet up with Nikki in Philadelphia but would only find Tiffany there explaining that she wrote the letters
4. He's supposed to meet up with his friend Danny after he runs away from Tiffany in Philadelphia, he is found with a broken leg.
5. After all this he realizes he does love Tiffany.

The only reason I'm complaining so much about this is because it really ruined the movie, it was still amazing acted and produced but the plot became more of a common ending. If they went with the books ending not only would the plot be completely different but you'd also be more interested. You wouldn't have known the first 2 hours of watching it that Tiffany was writing all the letters, and you would have thought that there were no silver linings because of what just happened and then you would have been surprised again when pat does love Tiffany after Nikki never shows up...... In the book Nikki never actually sees pat

Main character simplistic, but that's the charm

I bought this book after watching the movie. This book is not really like the film, but it resonates the same slow, torturous romance between two people who have many problems. While some readers have complained that no psychologist would behave the way the one in the book does, that's OK. It's fiction. The fact of the matter is you have two social misfits who have had some real trauma in their lives that find one another. One knows right away she should be with him, but he, on the other hand, has traumatic brain injury (way late in the book do they mention this) and has a fixation on his ex-wife that he doesn't even know is an ex. Bless the author for creating a deeply loving mother willing to go out on a limb and take a chance bringing her son home so he can regain his life. This is a hopeful book and a story everyone should read.

Just so real...

This book is just real and at the same time hopeful. It's the idea that we all can struggle and get damaged, and yet with the support of even just a few sincere and loving people we can get through the worst and scariest parts of life and still be ok - and just accept ourselves and others for whatever they are and whatever they're able to be for us. I read this in one day because I couldn't bear to put it down -- just read this book! The story and style are spellbinding.

Fast forward to 2001, when Tropic Thunder Les Grossman character writer Justin Theroux starred in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive movie. Any connection? Dah! Les satisfied a Martin Scorsese associate producer request to organize the US Capital as a backdrop to his DC scene in the movie "Medicine Ball Caravan" by making a phone call. Albeit, not a peacenik, Les Grossman was against sacrificing our troops as they heroically won every battle only for useless politicians to lose the war! That included massive Washington Monument demonstrations where Abby Hoffman and later stock broker Jerry Rubin welcomed everyone to the “World’s greatest hard on!” LG even provided truckloads of food on a donation basis. In eighth grade science class, he sat next to lifetime friend musician Ron Culbertson while they watched on TV our first American shot into Space and back. Then eight years later Les was backstage at the July 9, 1969 Blind Faith concert watching a small TV as Neil Armstrong took man’s first steps on the moon while the lanky pale Ginger Baker simultaneously strolled in front of him to get to his drum set! As LG helped make the first smoothies on the planet, he opened GaZang Organic Groceries before anybody dreamed of Whole Foods! Participated in the opening of the Georgetown Apple Pie
club. He produced an FM radio underground music show when FM radio effectively meant find me! Les discovered and lived in the World famous Negril, Jamaica resort Rick’s Café when it was nothing more than a $100 a month over-run play boy pad! He observed Jimmy Page and Robert Plant being interviewed by Time Magazine back- stage at his onetime only in US concert history, Led Zeppelin/Who gig. The interview stopped as everyone wondered who the kid was leaning against the wall. They found out when Les Grossman told them he was the producer as in the guy paying them to perform and they could go on with their interview! Decades later, for whatever reason, Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller, and writer Justin Theroux did a Hollywood portrayal of the real Les Grossman in a Tropic Thunder cameo role. While Tom Cruise as LG not only reignited his then faltering career when LG stole the show, the character developed a life of his own with a huge global fan base. Sure enough, a couple years later Les Grossman was invited to produce the MTV awards with a killer Jennifer Lopez dance skit. Upon that performance taking Hollywood by storm plus of course going viral, Paramount Films “committed” $100,000,000 to make the Les Grossman movie. “Not so fast” says the real Les Grossman as he co-writes his own screenplay or he’ll have to tell the powers to be to take a big step back and etc. etc. This is where we are now folks. About the Author
M.R. Polish was born in Idaho, a long, long, long, maybe not that long time ago.... Writing has always been there for her. Growing up, her mind was filled with stories, some she shared and others she filed away to write down later in life. It wasn't until 2011 that she decided to publish her stories for everyone to enjoy. Her first award and when writing became more than just an idea was in the 5th grade. She won the scary story contest for the school newspaper. It is one story she still has tucked away for memories. Her teacher told her she could be anything she wanted and that she had a talant for writing, being creative and drawing people into her stories. M.R. took that to heart and continued to write, although mostly in secret until recent years. Now you can find her enjoying life with her family - wrangling her four kids, setting traps in the house with toys for unsuspecting victims (aka, her husband) and writing down all her crazy and fun stories. Great sequel!

This was an amazing read! There were twists and turns, not only in plot, but characters as well. I just love Ian and Es together! I am very thankful that there is not a love triangle. Es realizes who she loves and she sticks by her decision. I liked her decision as well. We meet some new characters in this book. I really liked one of them, only during a fight scene she (spoiler). We meet the Death Keeper, who is the leader of Hell and who makes deals with people. By the end of the book, he becomes a likeable character, but keep in mind who and what he is. (I think that will make more sense when you read the book.)
I guess if there was one thing I didn't like about the story it was that one of the main characters (spoiler). It broke my heart and I am hoping that something changes in the next book. I have to be honest and say that if it stays like it is, I am not sure I would want to read the next book because this one thing that happened would probably keep me from rereading the series. This is just a pet-peeve with me, not anything with the book. The book was really awesome!

I love the realtionship between the Guardians and wolves, as well as the love and respect that is shown between family and friends.
I highly recommend this book, but be ready for some "oohh and aahh" moments.

This book has some mild language, some creepiness/torture scenes (not too graphic) with all that pertains to Nicholas, some kissing and two scenes of premarital sex, which was not graphic at all. It was more of just letting us know that it happened.(Just wanted to put this in my review in case parents were reviewing this book for their younger children)

All in all, I would recommend it for YA and older. (Me being in the older category! HAHA!) I will wait and see what the next book holds before I read it.

**UPDATE** All is well with my "pet-peeve"! The author has assured me that all will be well with the character I was heartbroken over. "Character" has good things awaiting "Character" in the next book!!! YAY! So, overlook my concern earlier in my review and read this series. You will not be disappointed!!! We just have to wait on the next book!

Cover Art~ Wow can I just say that I adore this cover and can't wait to see it on my self! It is so beautiful! I love the color contrast and that you see Es sleeping and someone watching her while she sleeps. This cover begs to be read!

My Review~
WOW OH WOW OH OMG!! This book is full of twists turns and add an emotional rollercoaster with it makes one heck of a book! This book is beyond awesome! It is even better than the first which was hard to beat!! I felt as I was in the book and I was captivated by the story from chapter 1! I experienced all the emotions that Es, Jarak, and Ian had through this wonderful story. This book really had be enthralled and captivated! Did I mention what A FREAKING AWESOME ENDING!! Can't wait to see what is in store for Es and Ian in the next book! I loved the scenery and the descriptions of the characters. I also loved the interactions between them they are so funny. Es is awesome!! LOVE IT! I love her fiery temper!In this novel, hang on tight there are going to be some happy and sad moments!Can't wait to see what else this amazing author can concocked in her writing genius mind!

Love it ALL! Must. Have. MORE.

Holy Moley what have you done?!? Never in a million years did I think someone could have me liking the devil himself! And actually looking forward to his return in the story ... yeah that was just weird! BUT... I LOVE it ALL! These characters grasp ahold never letting go. I think Esmeralda rocks! (Pfft...as if her & my daughter having the same name wasn't enough to make me like her instantly!) Seriously though, even the bad guys have depth, mystery, & beg for you to love them. With them I laughed, cried, & screamed at times. I love a story that can make me laugh with plenty of twists, loads of action, a bit of romance, & a whole lot of awesome. Wolf Dream's got it! Magic, Shifters, True Love, Comedy, Drama, & Action!
Must. Have. More.
